PARENTING

Purpose

The Parenting Programme is a counselling programme aimed at clients who are experiencing difficulties providing appropriate levels of care and protection for their children, due to a range of circumstances impacting on the family unit and the possible interrelationship between family members. The Parenting Programme focuses on the individual development of the skills and knowledge that underpin the basic concepts of good parenthood. Clients are assessed to identify areas of weakness in their understanding and application of parenthood. Gaps identified in the client’s skill and knowledge base is progressively satisfied through one-on-one counselling, group activity or on referral to other outsourced services.

Goals

• To ensure that the welfare and well-being of the children is paramount at all times
• To increase the client’s level of understanding of the concepts and principles of good parenthood
• To increase the parent’s ability to access and use community resources to support parentinge
• To improve the standard of care and protection for children through targeted skill development

Outcomes

1. On completion of the programme, clients will be able to cope more effectively with the demands of parenthood through an improved knowledge and skills-base.
2. Clients will be capable of accessing community resources and networks to support the parenting role..
3. Children in the care of clients will experience an improvement in the standard of care provision after six months from completion of the programme
